Who were the Seattle Black Panthers? They were …young neighbors who dared to demand justice for all oppressed people, regardless of their skin color. These young women and men resisted the environmental impact of a proposed freeway through their community. They led the way to feeding hungry children by creating a breakfast program. They created Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center, one of many Panther clinics that shined the light on sickle cell anemia and its impact on black people. Their focus on infant mortality and the increased incidents of young black mothers dying during childbirth forced the medical community to be more accountable to our voices and needs. The Black Panthers fight is part of our rich American history. Their story must be told!
